Growth & nesting

Growth is the game's real currency: everything a creature becomes — stats, abilities, Elder access, mutation rolls — is paid for in survived age. This guide explains the age system, what changes at each milestone, and how nesting turns one creature into a lineage.

The age system

Age 67The growth-mutation window the official wiki references for Glow Tail, Shadow, and plushie-boosted rollsBe token-free and plushie-equipped before this window, not after
Age 100Adulthood: full stat pool, widest ability set, the Max Growth Token's endpointRe-measure drain rates; the creature that starts the run is not the one that finishes it

Age only moves one way

Every point of age is time alive. A death does not just cost the progress bar — it costs the mutation windows you passed through and the stage you had reached. That is why the whole game's advice reduces to: protect the run.

What changes at each stage

  1. 1

Baby — survive, do not explore

The smallest stat pool plus the fastest needs pressure. Stay near cover, decline every duel, and keep loops short.

  2. 2

    Teen — expand carefully

Movement strengthens and the stat pool grows. Widen the loop one variable at a time and keep the departure rule.

  3. 3

    Adult — the real creature

Full stats and, per the current controls reference, breath abilities online. Routes can now match the creature's body instead of its fragility.

  4. 4

    Elder — the long game

The aging path beyond adulthood. Treat it as a long-session goal with patch-dependent rewards, verified before committing.

Growing efficiently

  1. 1

Choose the creature for the grow

A small herbivore or omnivore grows safest; a large carnivore grows fastest in a group that feeds it.

  2. 2

    Bank a quiet route

The beginner needs loop is the growth engine — repetition without incidents is what turns minutes into age.

  3. 3

    Protect the 67 window

If mutations matter, arrive at age 67 token-free and with the right plushie equipped.

  4. 4

    Decide on tokens honestly

Tokens skip time but close the mutation door. Disposable slots can burn them; collectible slots grow the long way.

  5. 5

    Insure the milestone

As age 100 (or any Elder attempt) approaches, carry a revive or the Shoom reserve that makes a keep-mutation restart survivable.

Nesting basics

Nesting lets one player host a nest and others hatch from it. It is the only source of nesting mutations (Albinism, Diamond, Piebald, Shimmer, and the event calendar mutations among them), and hatching is where lineages, packs, and most of the game's social fabric begin.

  • A hatchling from a palette-equipped parent spawns with a Nested Palette — which can break on relaunch, so re-attach colors from your inventory if it does.
  • Nesting mutations and growth mutations stack: a nested creature can still roll growth mutations later.
  • Hosts and hatchers should agree on the nest location and the hatchling plan before the egg, not after.
  • Plushie boosts (Blood Moon's Catalyst, Fool's Gold's Golden Bulb, Smore Cat, Magic Frog) add +10% to user hatchlings — equip them on the parent before the hatch.

Running a nest session

  1. 1

    Agree the target

Which mutation, which parent creature, whose nest. Ten seconds of chat saves an hour of confusion.

  2. 2

    Pick a defensible nest spot

Cover, one exit, and distance from high-traffic hunting routes.

  3. 3

    Equip boosts first

Boost plushies apply at the moment of hatching — after the egg is laid is too late.

  4. 4

    Hatch in batches

Consecutive nests beat one-off attempts; the roll is independent every time.

  5. 5

    Protect the hatchlings

The minutes after hatching are the most dangerous of the whole system: get them to cover before anything else.

  6. 6

    Log every hatch

Species, boosts equipped, mutation result. Your own drop data is the only honest odds table.

Death, revival, and what survives

EventWhat survivesWhat is lost
Death + Revive TokenAll stats, mutations, palettes, and stored progressDeath Points from the previous life
Death + paid restart (50 Shooms)Mutations (fee keeps them)Age, stage, and growth progress
Death + free restartNothing but the species ownershipEverything on the slot, including mutations and palettes

The revive-versus-restart decision is the most expensive decision in the game; the table is why.

Field checklist

01

Age plan set

You know which milestone matters for this creature (67, 100, Elder) before the run.

02

No token conflicts

Growth tokens are avoided on any slot that needs growth mutations.

03

Nest secured

A nesting session has a host, a safe nest location, and a plan for the hatchlings.

04

Insurance ready

A revive or Shoom reserve exists before the age that matters is on the line.

FAQ

How does age work in Creatures of Sonaria?

Age is a number your creature accrues by staying alive, and it drives both growth stage and mutation windows. Key recorded milestones: growth mutations cluster around age 67, adulthood completes at age 100 (a Max Growth Token sets age to 100 directly), and the Elder stage continues past adulthood.

What are the growth stages?

Baby, teen, and adult, followed by the Elder path. Each stage raises the creature's stat pool; the baby stage is the most fragile because its needs pressure is high while its stats are lowest.

Do growth tokens hurt my creature?

They disqualify the slot from growth mutations, which matters to anyone hunting Glimmer, Shadow, Glow Tail, or event mutations. Otherwise they are pure time-savers: a Partial Growth Token adds 33 age, a Max Growth Token jumps straight to 100.

How does nesting work?

One player hosts a nest and another hatches from it. Nesting is the only source of nesting mutations, and a hatchling born from a palette-equipped parent spawns with a Nested Palette. Nesting is also the social core of the game — families, packs, and lineages all start there.

What is Elder and how do I reach it?

Elder is the post-adult aging path. The official wiki treats its exact timing and bonuses as patch-dependent, so verify the current requirements in game before planning a long Elder run — the pattern (survive past adulthood, earn Elder perks) is stable even when the numbers move.
